Russia's unified e-visa is open to citizens of a government-approved list of countries, and the United States is not on it. An American traveler therefore applies for a traditional visa placed in the passport, based on an invitation document, through the Russian diplomatic mission handling applications in the United States. Under the US-Russia bilateral agreement, tourist visas for Americans are generally issued as multiple-entry visas valid for three years.
One sober planning note: the US State Department currently lists Russia under a Level 4 travel advisory. That is a factor to weigh in your own decision, and it changes nothing about the administrative steps described on this page.
Why Americans cannot use the Russian e-visa in 2026
The unified e-visa, introduced in 2023, lets eligible nationalities apply online without an invitation, for a single entry and a short stay. The list of eligible countries is set by the Russian government and covers most of the European Union, much of Asia, Latin America and the Gulf. The United States does not appear on that list as of the verification date of this page.
Practical consequence: any website offering to sell an American traveler a Russian e-visa should be treated with caution. If your passport is American, your route is the consular visa. If you hold a second passport from an eligible country, the e-visa may be an option on that passport, with its own rules and its own consequences to think through.

Which Russian visa can a US citizen get?
The three-year multiple-entry tourist visa
Under the bilateral agreement between the United States and Russia, American tourists are generally issued multiple-entry visas valid for three years. Each stay remains limited in duration, and the exact terms are set by the consulate when the visa is issued. Business and private visit visas
A business visa relies on an invitation from a Russian organization and suits recurring professional travel. A private visit visa relies on an invitation linked to the person hosting you. Each category has its own supporting documents, and the invitation must match the real purpose of the trip: a mismatch between the declared purpose and the actual one is a classic reason for problems at the border.
Moving to Russia: the Decree 702 route
If your project is residency rather than tourism, do not pick a visa just because it seems fast. Presidential Decree 702, known in the press as the Shared Values Visa, provides its own entry route: a single-entry private visa of up to three months, issued for the purpose of applying for a temporary residence permit after arrival. The invitation letter, explained
A consular visa application is built on an invitation or confirmation document that matches the visa category. For tourism, this is a confirmation of hosting issued by an authorized Russian tour operator or hotel. For business, an invitation from a Russian company or organization. For a private visit, an invitation connected to your host. For the Decree 702 route, the application letter provided for by the decree plays this role.
Two practical points. First, the invitation is a formal document with your passport data on it: any spelling difference between the invitation and your passport can block the application. Second, invitations are issued documents, not formalities you improvise: they take time, they have a cost, and they must be consistent with your itinerary and dates.

- Passport: valid for at least six months beyond the visa period, with blank pages, and in good condition.
- Invitation or confirmation: the document matching your visa category, with your data spelled exactly as in your passport.
- Application form: completed online on the official consular portal, printed and signed.

- Medical insurance: covering Russia for the travel period, when required for your category.
- Category-specific documents: depending on the visa, proof of funds, employment details or additional supporting papers may be requested.
